Perseus, SAM WORTHINGTON, the bastard son of the god, Zeus, LIAM NEESON, has been raised by a fisherman, PETE POSTLETHWAITE, and his wife, ELIZABETH MCGOVERN; but his adoptive parents are killed in the turmoil that follows a rebellion by humans against the gods. Zeus gives the power-hungry Hades, RALPH FIENNES, permission to unleash the awesome Kraken on the human population…
Perseus leads a small band of men, played by MADS MIKKELSON, NICHOLAS HOULT, LIAM CUNNINGHAM and HANS MATHESON among others, to the lair of Medusa whose head he needs if the Kraken is to be defeated. They’re watched over by the mystical Io, GEMMA ARTERTON, and along the way they encounter some formidable monsters, including giant scorpions…
This dismal remake of the 1981 cult classic will do nothing to further the advance of the 3D process. The murky images are rendered even murkier by the tinted 3D glasses, and, in any case, the use of the third dimension is never very creative.
French director Louis Leterrier, who was responsible for the TRANSPORTER films and THE INCREDIBLE HULK, makes a botch of the action sequences – they’re so clumsily handled it’s difficult to see what’s happening (tip to Louis – if you’re going to make another movie like this, check out your local video store for something by Kurosawa, or almost any movie with sword fight scenes, to see how it’s done).
The actors are allowed to use their own accents, and SAM WORTHINGTON’S Aussie inflections stand out among the mixture of voices – most bizarrely, RALPH FIENNES adopts a whiny tone that sounds vaguely Pythonesque.
This would be a completely awful one-star disaster if not for some of the monsters – the Kraken is formidable enough, but Medusa is even better. She’s almost worth the price of admission, but she deserves a better movie than this one.
